Piles or hemorrhoids are swollen or inflamed veins around the anus or lower rectum that causes bleeding and pain. This affliction is believed to affect between 50% to70 percent of the population. Thus Dr G.D.Pol Foundation, decided to take up the cause in a bid to reduce the stigma attached to this embarrassing problem.
A Jain trust sponsored 290 operations for patients suffering from hemorrhoids to observe World Piles Day on Sunday, Nov 22 2011. The marathon surgeries were conducted at YMT Medical College in Khargar. The group’s feat has been recorded by India book of record and the Limca Book of Records is waiting. The operations were conducted continuously in 12 hours between 5.55am and 7.30pm in a specially constructed 4,000 sq ft operation theatre that could hold10 doctors at a time. All the patients were doing well.
All of this was conducted under the leadership of Dr Sanjeev Yadav, Mahesh V Sanghavi, Dr Vidya Dharne and Dr. Manish Dhuri in one day.
In order to popularize the day, it was decided to make the operations a record.
The last such entry in the Limca Book of Records is of a Rajkot group that performed 137 operations in a day. All the records of the entire process are maintained and got notarized as well.
